Purpose & Values
Our After School Program exists to serve two needs in our local community: the need for structured, safe after-school activities for children and the need for academic supports and assistance for many students. We believe that God has called us to meet the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of our community. We have a heart of service for our neighbors and want to help in any way we can to build strong families.
We are guided in our purpose by these values:
- Everyone is made in the image of God and deserves our love and care.
- We want to see students learn and grow academically and socially so that they can achieve their goals and dreams.
- We care about families and want to support parents as they provide for their children.
- Schools are a vital part of the fabric of our community and need our full support.
Structure and Overview
About: The After School Program at Palos Heights CRC seeks to offer homework assistance, tutoring, and structured activities for students in Kindergarten-5th grade.
Schedule: The After School Program will meet every Tuesday and Thursday during the normal academic year from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. We will not meet on major holidays.
Location: We will meet at the LINK building at the front of our campus, although we may also use the main church building for indoor group games and the playground by the Preschool.
Activities: We will provide a light snack each day for students when they arrive. (please let us know about any special dietary requests!)
We will spend some time helping students complete their homework assignments as needed. If requested by the students or their parents, we will provide extra tutoring to students in the desired subjects.
We will plan structured games, crafts, or other activities for students each day. Students will also be able to pursue independent games or activities on their own.
Supervision: The After School Program will be limited to an enrollment of no more than 20 students, and we will have 3-4 adults or high school students present each day to supervise the students. We will screen our volunteers in accordance with our Safe Church Policy and will perform a national criminal background check on all adult volunteers.
Transportation: Upon request, our shuttle bus will be available to pick up students from elementary schools within 1.5 miles of our campus. We provide regular shuttle service from the Nathan Hale campus in Crestwood.
Cost: The only fee for participating in our After School Program is $5 per week to help cover the costs of snacks and supplies. Late fees will be charge for children picked up after 5:00 pm without advance notice.
