Palos Heights Christian Reformed Church conceptually began in 1953 when Rev. Sidney Werkema was sent to survey Southwest and West Chicago areas after two Chicago classes determined that a need existed for a church in the Worth-Palos area.
In 1954, meetings held at Elim Christian School that led to Sunday morning services, and soon after, evening services as well. This group was named the Elim Home Mission Project.
In the Summer of 1954, Elim Home Mission Project had to bid farewell to Rev. Werkema and his family as they headed to Grand Rapids, MI to start a new project.
Within one week, Dr. J.G. Van Dyke was sent by the Classis Committee to lead Sunday services and make sure Elim Home Mission Project would become a church. As the summer continued, Mr. R. Hiskes and Mr. G. Terborg were appointed as the Building and Grounds Committee, and they would accept an offer of six acres, at a cost of $1,500 per acre. The group finalized the deal after being formally organized and incorporated. At this time they changed their name from Elim Home Mission Project to Palos Heights Christian Reformed Church Group.
In February of 1955, the Palos Height Christian Reformed Church Group was accepted into the Christian Reformed Church's Classis Chicago South with just 25 charter families and seven individual adults for a total of 109 members. Before long, the church out grew their existing structure and needed to build a newer, bigger sanctuary that would be completed and dedicated in 1961. The church would continue to grow, and in 1991 a new Fellowship Hall and Classrooms were dedicated.
Today, the former parsonage on 127th Street is serving as a Ministry House which we call the The Link. We have purchased two additional parsonages behind the church, in which our Senior Pastor and Associate Pastor reside.
We Thank and Praise God for 50 Years of His continued faithfulness to the Church and Palos Community.
